Team Trium, comprising of our undergraduates, Cheung Ho Yeung, Kho Han Jie Fabian and Kwan Jin Yao, came in as first-runners up in the SG50 competition, ‘Local Champions, Global Leaders.’
Organised by SPRING Singapore, students from Singapore’s universities and polytechnics were invited to bring to life the success stories of organisations and people who have shaped the history of Singapore. From 76 submissions from across all six local universities and five polytechnics, 16 winning teams were crowned ‘Local Champions, Global Leaders.’ The winners received their awards from Guest-of-Honour Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Manpower and Co-Chair of the SG50 Economic and International Committee at the prize presentation ceremony held at the Suntec Convention Centre.
The competition saw students using creative design elements and various media forms to articulate their stories. Team Trium presented a compelling and human interest-driven narrative of SembCorp Marine, a leading marine and offshore engineering group based in Singapore.
“We were drawn by the possibility of presenting the narrative of an established local corporation. From a business perspective, news about an oil rig builder was often about its financial expansion and performance, with little mention of its capabilities, its values, and its people. But we wanted to share the people stories behind SembCorp’s success,” the team writes, in a blog on their project.
After months of rigorous research (online, media archives, industry associations etc.), interviews with staff and management of SembCorp Marine and company/site visits, the team condensed its narrative into 15 key milestones of the company, presented in a visually attractive booth at the exhibition.
“Many believe that SG50 is a time for celebration, to take stock of our collective success. We see it as a little more: It is also an opportunity to provide affirmation to the organisations and people who have toiled in the background for our glorious success. These were the convictions which led us to our participation in the ‘Local Champions, Global Leaders’ competition in the first place. We loved story-telling, and this chance to share the stories of a company anchored in Singapore was not something we could pass up,” writes the team.
