Record turnout at NUS Open Day 2015

NUS welcomed a whopping 25,600 enthusiastic visitors to its Kent Ridge and Bukit Timah campuses at this year’s Open Day – recording the highest turnout at the annual event in recent years.

NUS Open Day

As the main admissions and outreach event, NUS Open Day showcases the university’s academic life, its vibrancy and culture. It provides prospective students, as well as their families and friends, with a preview of a wide range of academic programmes, global exchange opportunities, career prospects, student activities and residential experiences.

This year, 12 different faculties and schools showcased their expertise through 24 exhibition booths, and almost 90 talks about their various programmes. The Student Village at UTown showcased a host of student activities and featured 12 University clubs including the NUS Students’ Union, University Scholars Club and many interest groups.

Vice-Dean (Undergraduate Studies) Associate Professor Chng Chee Kiong and Assistant Dean (Undergraduate Academic) Jumana Zahalka, gave admissions talks at the packed UTown Auditorium. Everyone – from the Assistant Dean and Director Dr Helen Chai, to staff and student ambassadors – was on hand to answer questions about our undergraduate programmes.

“Preparing for such a massive University-wide event is an exciting but challenging process – from booth design, publicity, and production of numerous marketing collaterals, coordination and preparation of faculty, staff and student ambassadors – there are so many things to consider. However, watching everything come together on the day, seeing everyone collectively champion the School, is a rewarding and priceless experience for me. This year is even more special, as we celebrate 50 years, and I enter into my seventh year of service,” exclaims NUS BBA alumna Loh Hui Xian, who has worked on the annual event since she joined the team as the Assistant Manager for BBA Marketing & Outreach.

Adrian Neo, Senior Manager of our BBA Admissions and Outreach team agrees. “Although we work on this event on an annual basis, the challenge is always to come up with something refreshing each year and conceptualise a holistic booth layout that conveys all the key information of our programmes in a simple, coherent way to our visitors. We are very glad to have an opportunity to push ourselves and institute new improvements each year. Aside from the booth, we are also very proud to have a big turnout of student ambassadors and faculty members. They are our voice on the ground and play a key role by providing a face to the programme and sharing their respective experiences. I believe this is the aspect of this event that most prospective students and their parents look out for: a personal touch that makes them feel assured and addresses any niggling queries they may have, to make the right decision on which programme to pursue.”
