Getting to Know: Jamilah Binte Ramli

In our ‘Getting To Know’ Series, we regularly feature staff, students, and other community members of NUS Business School, who make us who we are – you know, the ordinary people who make an extraordinary difference to our culture. 

She’s outspoken, funny and confident, and as one of just two administrative staff members supporting the School’s Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations (CGIO), Jamilah Binte Ramli is a force to be reckoned with. She handles administrative duties for the centre, including coordinating high-level events, academic seminars and industry roundtables. Seated in an office tucked away in the more tranquil wing of NUS Business School (yes, we are spread across two buildings, with the other one simply called ‘Biz 2’) that houses all the Research Centres, Jamilah and her peers enjoy the quiet and easy access to facilities in the building.

As a veteran of NUS, Jamilah also serves as a treasure trove of tips for newbies looking to survive and thrive in this vast community. Her best advice? Live well, leave well. Here’s Jamilah for you:

Name: Jamilah Ramli

Role & Department: I provide administrative support to the School’s Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations.

No. of years of service: I’ve worked at NUS for 14 years and I’ve been with NUS Business School for two years.

Family:  Husband and two grown-up children.

Describe yourself in three words: Outgoing, cheerful, confident

My all-time dream is: Travel and more travel.  I’ve been to Saudi Arabia, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Perth in Australia, Bangkok in Thailand, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and Indonesia. Eventually, I want to spend my twilight years in a retirement village somewhere in Australia.

Random fact about me:  I’m a big movie buff and enjoy baking. Also, having worked in finance for a long time, I’m quite good with numbers and rarely have to use calculators.

Coolest thing/fact about my team/department is:  We work hard, we play hard

Three things I love about my job: Meeting people from different walks of life and of different seniority levels during the Centre’s events. I also like the fact that I can work independently and make my own decisions wherever possible.

During weekends I love to: Sleep in till late and eat out to discover new cuisines and food joints.

Best advice to my co-workers: Don’t take life too seriously. Live well, leave well.

Jamilah Binte Ramli is a management assistant officer in the Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations at NUS Business School. She has been with NUS since 2000. Prior to joining NUS, she worked in the banking sector in a front-line role. Jamilah has spent seven years in finance at an established hotel in Singapore.
