The President’s Graduate Fellowship (PGF) is awarded to candidates who show exceptional promise or accomplishment in research. According to two PhD recipients, it has allowed them to focus on their research without having to bear a financial burden. They told Outside-In what a huge difference it has made.
A small delegation of 10 undergraduate students from an accounting theory class recently went on an expedition to Pekanbaru, Indonesia to learn more about the environmental and social impact of haze in the region.
Aimed at integrating theory with practice, the trip took a macro-view on environmental accountability and corporate social responsibility. Led by Professor Oliver Li, the students got a chance to blend classroom knowledge with real, business context and learn more about the environmental issue by visiting real business operations in plantations and potential ‘hotspots’.

NUS students worked together with top ASEAN social enterprises, to compete for prizes amounting to S$75,000 for the inaugural Crossing the Chasm Challenge held on 16 September 2016. The inaugural event focused on students working with industry mentors to help social enterprises helping to end poverty devise marketing plans and pitches for success.

Presented at the 50th anniversary celebrations of the German Psychological Society on Sept 18-22 in Leipzig, Germany, Michael was awarded the honour for his life-long contributions to the field of psychology. He has published over 150 peer reviewed journal articles, 150 book chapters and nearly 30 books and edited special issues till date. He is the most-cited management scholar in Germany and Asia-Pacific region, and among the 10 most-cited organizational behaviour and entrepreneurship researchers worldwide. He is ranked third in lifetime publications among German management professors and is the second most-cited economist in Germany (FAZ Ranking on Research 2015). As a cross-cultural organisational psychologist, Michael’s research interests span across innovation and innovation processes, the psychology of entrepreneurship and error management. He is particularly interested in enhancing the entrepreneurial mind-set of students and entrepreneurs in developing countries.
When Associate Professor Audrey Chia embarked on a study of how social entrepreneurship can make an impact in healthcare, little did she realise that her paper will start a global conversation.
Collaborating with Associate Professor Lim Yee Wei from the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, she co-authored a paper titled “Social Entrepreneurship: Improving Global Health” to underscore the growing role and effectiveness of social entrepreneurship in healthcare delivery. Drawing upon data and case studies of Asian social enterprises, the paper highlights how social enterprises such as Aravind Eye Care System and Kopernik, have risen to the task to meet basic health needs through frugal innovations.

Destiny© is a FMCG business simulator that imparts strategic marketing skills through a virtual consumer panel. By replicating consumer behaviours, it offers a holistic learning experience. Pit against one another, participants have to implement effective marketing and business strategies, and develop an understanding of what drives store choice and brand choice. In doing so, they become proficient in the use of market knowledge and financial data for day-to-day business decisions.
Professor Michael Frese, Provost’s Chair and Head of Management and Organisation, was recently awarded The Dedication to Entrepreneurship Award, the Academy of Management’s highest award in the Entrepreneurship Division . The Award recognises a small number of individuals and organisations who have made extraordinary, long-term contributions that advance the mission and interests of the Division.

Close to 300 directors and top management attended the Launch of the Board Risk Committee Guide and ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard (ACGS) 2016 event organized by Singapore Institute of Directors (SID).
The ACGS is an initiative of the ASEAN Capital Markets Forum and the Asian Development Bank to create a common tool for assessing the corporate governance of publicly listed companies in the ASEAN countries. The participating countries are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The 2015 ACGS results are based on companies’ disclosures on websites and annual reports with financial year end between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2015.
Legislative action drives up sustainability reporting. The positive impact by regulatory action becomes more obvious when there are higher levels of disclosure in indicators that require mandatory reporting, according to the Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations (CGIO).
This result was presented in a recent session where CGIO gave an update on its report on sustainability reporting to companies including ACCA, Capitaland, City Development Limited, Ernst and Young, Global Compact Network Singapore, Keppel Land, KPMG, Paia Consulting, Singtel and Suntory Beverage and Food Asia.
