Last month, a packed hall of students met Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP. With nearly 77,000 employees and 300,000 customers in 190 countries, SAP is the world’s business software market leader. Bill is also the author of “Winners Dream: A Journey from Corner Store to Corner Office”, where he shares his journey from teenage entrepreneur to global CEO.
Bill began his professional career at Xerox, where he worked for 17 years and rose through the ranks to become the company’s youngest corporate officer and division president. He joined SAP in 2002 to lead the North America business, and became the company’s co-CEO in 2010 and its sole CEO in 2014.
However, as a businessman, Bill started his journey at 17, just a little younger than our undergraduates, when he bought his first deli with $5,500 in loans. His promise to his creditors then – if he failed to make any of the repayments as scheduled, he would lose the deli. He paid them back, within two months, a total sum of $7,000, including interest. The deli paid his way through college, and was sold once that purpose was achieved.
Student ambassador programmes by organisations help develop students’ technical and soft skills. One such initiative is the Deloitte Student Ambassador Program.
Launched in 2014, the Program was introduced to recognise talented new staff. Its Student Ambassadors are those who have accepted priority offers to join the firm upon graduation and have excelled in their studies, co-curricular activities or their internships with the firm.
The 2015 edition of the Program saw Low Zhan Hao Pierre, BAC Year 3 and Ngui Jia Yi, BAC Year 2 joining Deloitte as the firm’s Student Ambassadors. Continue reading →
Students of Associate Professor (Strategy and Policy) Marleen Dieleman’s class got a chance to get up close with a CEO when Henri Honoris, CEO of PT Modern Internasional, the franchise owner of 7-Eleven Indonesia, was invited to speak in her class.
While introducing the 7-Eleven franchise to Indonesia in 2009, Honoris created a new business model – he added a café concept into what was originally just a regular convenience store. This move turned 7-Eleven into a popular hangout for youths and young adults in Jakarta. Today, there are over 190 stores in Jakarta.
Full-time MBA student Jose Antonio Borrero is finding that going on exchange programmes overseas brings major benefits. Last month, he took part in an entrepreneurship course at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) and found the time spent there to be a precious experience.
The MBA programme offers some 17 courses under its short exchange programmes at universities worldwide, giving students the opportunity to broaden their outlook and develop awareness of different cultures and economic environments.
Participating schools include Tel Aviv University, Tsinghua University, and the Norwegian School of Economics. The duration of these courses ranges from one week to a month.

For Business School alumnus Ivy Tse Wing Man (’11), receiving the Lee Kong Chian Global Merit Scholarship as an undergraduate opened up a world of opportunities and gave her the freedom to discover the passion that would shape her future career choice.
The Scholarship – established from gifts from the Lee Foundation and awarded to individuals who demonstrate academic excellence, all-roundness and leadership qualities – gave Ivy the opportunity to throw herself into the many activities on offer at NUS outside the academic programmes.

Team Chrome Consulting, comprising of our undergraduates Eleanor Low, Phyllis Ng, Matthew Reuben Yeo and Soh Hwa Jie, beat 14 international teams to win the Scotiabank International Case Competition 2015. Organised by the Ivey Business School in Canada, the annual competition explores the diverse challenges and complexities associated with a international business. With just 15 hours to prepare for the case, our team impressed the judges with their in-depth case analysis, quality of presentation and responses to judges’ questions. The team is grateful to Associate Professor Tan Soo Jiuan, for her mentorship and guidance throughout the competition.
