BBA Orientation: Bonding and building rapport

1 (41)

Orientation seems to be a time of fun and games for Business School first-year undergraduate students.

But it is an important period that allows them to settle into university life before classes start, according to Belmen Woo, the outgoing Vice-President for Student Life, Management Committee, Bizad Club.

“Students will be interacting through a series of freshmen orientation projects with their peers who are going to be classmates during the semester,” said Belmen.

“They will not be strangers when school starts and this means that they can strike up a rapport faster when they have to work on projects and engage in other academic activities,” he added.

The Bizad Club takes a leading role in welcoming and guiding the first-year students, with Belmen and his team organising five freshmen orientation projects (FOPs) that not only allow the new students to play, but also be better prepared for the first year.

Here are the five FOPs that make up BBA Orientation at the Business School.

NUS Business Camp
Held from 10 June, this kicks off Orientation and helps the new students forge new friendships and interact with their seniors through a series of competitions, games and presentations.

O’Week
NUS Business Orientation Week (O’Week) helps to ease the students into their new academic lives. It is held during the first week of the new semester. During the camp, they are grouped with their seniors who have already experienced the same modules and classes that the freshmen will be taking. Talks are arranged to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to do well in the rigorous curriculum of the Business School.

Flag
NUS Business Flag is a community engagement programme that is designed to create a culture of giving back to the society. Freshmen and seniors alike will appeal for donations in aid of the School’s beneficiaries, armed with barely more than a tin can and a heart to serve.

Rag
Rag stands for Receiving & Giving, and it is a chance for Business School to thank the beneficiaries and donors for their contributions during Flag. Faculties and student halls across NUS come together in a competition of performances. This year, the students managed to add a 15th Gold title with the theme of Singapore as a home.

Jam’n’Hop
Jam’n’Hop is the Business School’s annual pageant and serves as a finale of the Orientation phase with a big party at Zouk.
