The President’s Graduate Fellowship (PGF) is awarded to candidates who show exceptional promise or accomplishment in research. According to two PhD recipients, it has allowed them to focus on their research without having to bear a financial burden. They told Outside-In what a huge difference it has made.
The CIMB ASEAN Stock Challenge 2016 saw our undergraduates – Team Fujok, emerge as overall 2nd Runner Up in the regional Grand Finale held at the Singapore Exchange on 9 January 2017.
Led by team captain Devin Nathanael (BBA Year 1), Team Fujok consists of Gideon Wong (BAC Year 1), Sagar Nilesh Shah (BBA Year 1) and Ryan Timothy Phua (Life Sciences Year 2), they beat some 300 teams at the Singapore Finals last October to become National Champions. They further clinched honours for having the Best Strategy Paper Award at the national level which qualified them for a spot at the regional Grand Finale against teams from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
It has been a rewarding year for Lee Junxian (BBA 2008, S3 Asia MBA 2014) and Justin Lie Wee Chian (BBA 2010) with their e-payment security firm CashShield winning the National Infocomm Awards 2016 and Fintech Awards 2016.
CashShield’s eponymous anti-fraud software product impressed judges at both competitions with its use of data analytics to automatically set its management algorithm.
Led by Alumna and Adjunct Professor Chen Chunhua (Department of Management & Organisation), a group of 55 Asia-Pacific EMBA (Chinese) alumni, has embarked on a mission to build cafes in China that double up as incubators for entrepreneurs.
The group recently opened its second café in Hangzhou in early December 2016. The first, based in Nanjing, opened in May 2015. The alumni adopted the brand name “Dreampresso” for the cafes.
The Eminent Business Alumni Awards recognise the School’s graduates who are not just business leaders, but also make a difference to society.
This year’s recipients were honoured by Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance at an award ceremony held at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel on 11 November 2016.

Team charts new growth strategies for China Mobile
Team oG Capital clinched the top spot at the Asia Investment Banking Conference HSBC M&A Case Study Competition. Led by Chris Chng (BBA Year 3), the team consists of Andy Soh (BBA Year 3 and Engineering Year 4), Szeto Kah Keong (BBA Year 2) and Goh Chong Wei (Engineering Year 2).
This year, some 60 teams were challenged to identify the UK firms that China Mobile can acquire to expand its business. oG Capital impressed the judges with its realistic valuation assumptions and clarity in transaction reasoning.

NUS Business School came up tops at the Belgrade Business International Case Competition. Led by Mabelyn Tan, with Phyllis Ng, Freddie Teo and Ahamed Marzouq making up the team, they faced off 15 other schools in two rounds of Serbian cases involving a bank and a tobacco company.
In space-constrained Singapore where the ratio of cars to citizens is roughly 1 to 10, finding parking lots can be a time-consuming exercise for motorists who have to spend time searching for available spaces or queuing outside car park entrances.
But Neil Mehta (MBA 2015) believes his SurePark parking platform can solve the problem. SurePark involves palm-sized sensors that are placed on the ground of every lot detect the presence of vehicles. These sensors feed data into the software platform to generate reports on the availability of the car park spaces.
Users can then access the information via the SurePark app, which also serves as a navigational guide to lead the motorist to the exact vacant slot. The app is also able to suggest alternative parking spaces in nearby car parks when the destination’s car park is full.
